Master of Business Administration

General

Program Description

Would you like to stand out in the international job market?

Do you already have an undergraduate degree from a university or university of applied sciences? (Or if not, do you have managerial experience?)

Would you like to earn a British Master’s degree while studying in English in Finland?

At the Helsinki School of Business and University of Northampton MBA programme:

  • You study mainly online and you are welcome to participate in on-campus intensive sessions in Finland (the intensive sessions are not mandatory).
  • You will earn an MBA degree from the University of Northampton form UK.
  • You earn the same degree that you would earn if you studied a full-time on-campus programme at the University of Northampton UK.
  • You will enjoy teaching from talented and popular instructors.
  • The workload is reasonable and allows you to work full time while studying.
  • You network with high-quality professionals. Of the 2019 starters 25 % are managing directors, 25% are members of the management team and 25% work in the expert position.

HELBUS offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree programme, where the degree is awarded by the University of Northampton (UoN), UK. This means that while studying in Finland, students are enrolled as UoN students and the programme follows closely the specification and policies of UoN. It is fully compliant with UK quality assurance regulations. This British MBA is an official postgraduate (Master’s) degree regulated by the UK educational authority, QAA.

The programme is offered in two modes: a full-time and a part-time mode. Both modes consist of online studies that can be taken from anywhere in the world and then 1-3 day intensive modules that are held in Helsinki. The attendance to the intensive modules is highly recommended but not absolutely mandatory.

The full-time mode takes 12 months to complete and in addition to the online part, there are 3-7 days a month in Helsinki. The part-time programme takes 24 months to complete and in addition to the online part, there are 1-3 days a month in Helsinki.

You are eligible to apply to the MBA programme if you have graduated (or are about to graduate) with an undergraduate degree in business and management. Degree holders of other disciplines may apply if they can demonstrate an interest in business and management in their motivation letter and CV. If you don't have a previous degree, we may still be able to admit you, if you can demonstrate managerial experience. (Previous job experience is not mandatory for those who have an earlier degree.)

The next available start is in January 2021 and applications should be submitted by November 30th 2020 (Finnish and EU/EEA citizens or applicants with residence permit).

If interested, please register via our application service here and start filling in your application.

Content

University of Northampton (UoN) and HELBUS have a partnership through which HELBUS can offer approved UoN business and management programmes in Finland. Students admitted to the MBA-programme will be considered to be UoN students, even though they study the whole programme in Finland.

The overall purpose of the MBA-programme is to prepare individuals for employment in a management role with a sound understanding of business/organisational contexts.

Compared to a specialist M.Sc. degree, the MBA is a generalist degree with a broader, more holistic approach.

The following modules are included:

Fall term

  • Critical Issues in Business: What are the pervasive issues in business today? What does current research reveal about them? Participants take a critical perspective throughout, setting the standards for all other modules.
  • Management and Organisational Behaviour: The search for competitive advantage has highlighted an increased emphasis on effective leadership skills, anchored into a global perspective. The module assesses the relevance of classical theory and modern research, with a strong focus on developing personal adaptability in cross-cultural work environments and rigorous understanding of what is required for global leadership aspirations.
  • Financial Decision Making: Participants will be provided with the strategic knowledge and capability in the concepts and applications of accounting, quantitative methods and management information, including the use of IT applications. It will equip leaders with critical interpretation and interrogation skills and support them in corporate decision making contexts.
  • Strategic Marketing: The module equips aspiring senior managers with the skills to help shape organisational success through leadership and analysis, planning and implementation of marketing activity, which creates and sustains superior performance in the market place.

Spring term

  • Managing Operations and the Supply Chain: The module provides leaders with strategic knowledge and capability in the concepts and applications of operations, supply chain management and project management. Participants will develop the skills to operate effectively beyond the bounds of their own organisations in an era of increasing outsourcing activity and off-shoring of manufacturing and service provision.
  • The Entrepreneurship Report: Ambitious managers today must show an entrepreneurial mindset. This module provides a critical approach to the application of entrepreneurial concepts in order to help participants develop an innovative new venture in a sector of their choosing.
  • Competitive Strategy and Innovation: Managers need the capability to develop and interpret strategies for their organisations, both at corporate and business levels in order to seek competitive advantage in a rapidly changing world, where innovation and adaptability are key strategic weapons.
  • Business Research Project: Managers are frequently required to undertake project work in addition to their core responsibilities. In this module, participants will conduct an independent piece of research-based upon an actual business case situation, either through an inductive study, or a deductive approach.

Summer term

  • International Business Negotiation: Management of organisations requires a skill set that facilitates the articulation, advocation and negotiation of business transactions and decisions that might develop the standing of the organisations. Participants will develop a range of negotiation skills, appreciating cross-cultural and situational sensitivities.
  • Business Research Project (continuing)

Overall, the MBA-degree consists of 180 UK credits (equivalent to 90 ECTS credits) and takes one calendar year (three terms) to complete in the full-time delivery option.

All teaching is in English and assessment is mainly through written assignments such as reports, essays and critical analysis.

 MBA student stories

Shkelqesa Jashanica

“Having decided to study business I made the decision to apply to HELBUS because it offered me the opportunity to graduate incredibly quickly. I also liked the idea of studying in an international environment and completing my education in English. I expected to receive a strong theoretical and practice knowledge in all the different areas of business during my studies and my expectations were exceeded. The instructors all have diverse backgrounds in business and education, and through them, I have been able to learn more than just the course content and broaden my own world view. HELBUS has excellent staff who have always supported me, and the entire study experience has helped me grow and develop as a person. As a HELBUS-graduate, I feel self-confident and prepared for the future.“

Demi Palanki

“I completed my Bachelor’s degree in HELBUS, so I started the MBA already confident in the quality of the school and the staff. As expected, studying the MBA was more challenging than before but it was a great experience during which I was exposed to many new ideas and developed a strong foundation for the future as a result. I have developed a lot during the programme and also gained the self-confidence needed to succeed in international business. The faculty was excellent overall, as they made the modules both interesting and practical, as well as being consistently supportive and encouraging throughout the programme. The best thing about HELBUS is the community spirit and it’s the network of people that I’ve met throughout the studies that I will value most.“

Hanna Hautajärvi

“Obtaining an MBA can be an important step in career development, as it really helps you stand out in the labour market. HELBUS’ programme, in particular, stood out for me due to its internationality and diversity of instructors, as well as the possibility to earn the degree quickly so as to be able to resume my career as soon as possible. There is very close cooperation between HELBUS and the University of Northampton, and these ties were evident in the quality of the education on offer. I am very happy with the experience of having studied on the MBA programme and looking back, I am only now beginning to fully realise the full extent of what I learned during that year.”

Pasi Ketolainen

“I was promised a high standard of teaching when I applied to HELBUS’s MBA programme, but my experience exceeded expectations. I have significant work experience in several different industries already and so was quickly able to see how my classroom studies directly translated to versatile solutions in working life. The studies allowed me to develop my professional skills and knowledge. Throughout the programme, I was able to develop my professional skills, and these have helped prepare me for future challenges in my career. Students to the programme come from a variety of backgrounds, making the classroom environment rewarding and interesting, as each brought their own experiences and perspectives with them. The instructors demanded a lot from us, also provided enough support and encouragement all the way through. At the beginning of my studies, I also encountered challenges with juggling personal schedules with the academic requirements, but I was helped along by the instructors, excellent staff and my supportive classmates. I graduated with excellent honours from the programme and would highly recommend it.”

Juuso Boman

“My career development is dependent on my ability to expand my knowledge and improve my competencies through business education. Since enrolling in the MBA at HELBUS Helsinki School of Business I have been very impressed by the flexibility of the school, as well as how customer-orientated they are. The ongoing collaboration with the University of Northampton is visible in the quality of the programme, as UoN’s business school has a proven track record in delivering top-notch education. Overall I’ve been very happy with my choice as it’s wonderful to be in an academic environment again. The course content, as well as the quality of teaching, has impressed me and the diverse cultural and business backgrounds of the international faculty, most of whom have entrepreneurial or business background, bring added value to the studies. I would highly recommend the HELBUS MBA to anyone looking to develop themselves professionally.”

Nina Toivanen

“I recently graduated from a Bachelor’s degree in Barcelona and wanted to complete a Master’s straight away. Had I applied to Finnish state universities, I would have had to wait for a year before starting my studies, but through HELBUS I was able to begin my post-graduate education immediately. I would like to work abroad in the future, so doing an MBA was ideal for me as it is well-respected internationally and can open many doors. I had previously studied for a higher national diploma at HELBUS so knew already that this was a school that I could enjoy and trust in. The MBA programme is challenging, but from previous experience, I know that the HELBUS staff and faculty will be there to help. Our MBA cohort is also very supportive and diverse, and we are able to learn a lot from each other.”
